How agencies can audit a client site for AI search readiness

Published 2026-10-05

A practical checklist agencies can use to find out whether ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews can understand and cite a client's pages.

Start with the pages that make money

An AI search readiness audit checks whether answer engines can understand, trust and quote a page. Start with the service pages and location pages that drive leads, not the whole site.

For each page, note the main question a customer would ask an AI assistant, such as “who is the best emergency dentist near me?”

Check for a direct answer near the top

AI engines pull short, self-contained answers. If the first paragraph does not answer the page's main question in one or two sentences, that is your first fix.

Confirm structure and facts

Look for one clear H1, descriptive H2 questions, short paragraphs and lists. Then check that concrete facts like prices, hours, service areas and credentials are written out in plain text.

Verify structured data

Make sure the page has valid JSON-LD for the business type, plus FAQPage markup where visible FAQs exist. Schema helps engines verify facts before citing them.

Record the starting scores so you can show the client the improvement in a follow-up report.
